Area information

Any visitor to San Gemini should not miss going to see the ruins of the Roman city of Carsulae. A municipium of the 6th Region of Augustus, Carsulae was a major stop along the Via Flaminia that ran from Narni to Mevania (today Bevagna).
Most of the buildings that we see today were erected between the 1st century BC and 100 AD. Two interesting twin temples indicate that this was an area where the cult of the dioscures was present. Some theories attribute the name San Gemini to the cult of the twin saints Cosma and Damian.

The Forum of Carsulae stood at the crossing between the town's two main streets, the cardus maximus that dissected from the north and constitutes part of the Via Flaminia, and the decamanus that ran across the city from east to west. The northern entrance to the city is marked by the arch of San Damiano, once a triple-archway with two lateral arches for pedestrians. Only the central arch survives today, preceded by some well-preserved funerary monuments as was the custom with Roman cities.

In the southern section of the city the Medieval church of San Damiano stands on the foundations of a previously existing Roman structure.
